Scott A. Brister has been a Justice of the Texas Supreme Court since November 2003. He was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to serve the remainder of departing Justice Craig T. Enoch's term, and was elected to a six-year term in November 2004. His current term ends December 31, 2010. Justice Brister is a Republican.
Legal Background
Brister is a native of Waco, Texas. He is a graduate of Duke University and Harvard Law School.
Legal Career
Prior to his appointment to the Texas Supreme Court, Brister had served as a Texas trial and appellate judge for many years. In 1989, he was appointed judge of the 234th District Court in Harris County, Texas by Governor Bill Clements, and he served there until 1998. He was civil administrative judge for the Harris County district court in 1998-1999. He was then elected to one of the Texas Courts of Appeals, the First Court of Appeals of Texas in 2000 and served there until Perry appointed him chief justice of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals of Texas in 2001. He was re-elected to that court in 2002.
