Martha Lee Walters (born 1950) is the 98th Associate Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court, in what is known as Position 7 of that court. She became the first female justice on the state's highest court in three years when she was appointed by Democratic Governor Ted Kulongoski in 2006. Her current term on the court expires in January 2009 and she must campaign for re-election on November 4, 2008. A native of Michigan, she worked on the Casey Martin lawsuit against the PGA Tour while in private legal practice. When Walters to the state Supreme Court in September of 2006, Oregon was one of only three states without a woman on its seven-member highest court.[1]
Legal Career
Statute of limitations in sex abuse cases
Justice Walters wrote the court's opinion in a March 2008 case that called into question the state's statute of limitations in sexual abuse cases.[3]
