United States Magistrates are appointed by District Judges, who "supervise the activities of the Magistrate Judges by assigning civil cases for jury or non jury trial upon consent of the parties and for pre-trial matters."[1]
When appointed, they will serve a term of eight years. In 1968, the Magistrate Judge system expanded upon the 175 year standing United States commissioner system.
