Lee A. Johnson (b. 1947) is a justice of the Kansas Supreme Court. Along with fellow justice Kay McFarland, he faces a retention election in 2008.

Justice Johnson was appointed to his position on the state's high court by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius on January 8, 2007, replacing retiring justice Donald Allegrucci.

Born in Caldwell, Kansas, Johnson was first an insurance salesman in the family business and then a lawyer in private practice. He was appointed to the state's Court of Appeals in 2001.

Legal Education and Experience

Justice Johnson received a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Kansas in 1969. After serving two years on active duty with the U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers, he became a licensed, multi-line insurance agent. In 1977, he entered Washburn University School of Law and graduated summa cum laude with the class of 1980. Upon graduation, he practiced law in Caldwell, Kansas; first in partnership with Don B. Stallings and later as a sole practitioner.

Associations

Justice Johnson was active in numerous community organizations, including serving on the Sumner Mental Health board for 16 years. He served as Mayor of Caldwell in 1975-1976, and as Caldwell City Attorney from 1987 to 1997. He is a member of the Kansas and Sumner County Bar Associations, serving as the local bar association president in 1992.

Lee is registered as a Republican.
