John Warner

John Warner is an associate justice of the Montana Supreme Court, a position to which he was appointed in May 2003 by then-Gov. Judy Martz, a Republican. His current term expires in 2014.
A native of Great Falls, Montana, he graduated from high school in Great Falls and earned a B.A. degree in history and political science from Montana State University, Missoula, in 1965. Justice Warner earned his J.D. from the University of Montana School of Law in 1967.
Legal career
Justice Warner was a law clerk for the Montana Supreme Court in 1967-68, and then practiced law in Havre, Montana, for 20 years specializing in litigation. He served as chairman of the Supreme Court Commission on Uniform District Court Rules, was both a trustee and president of the State Bar of Montana, and was Havre City Attorney. In 1988 he was elected District Judge of the Montana 12th Judicial District. He was re-elected in 1994 and 2000. While on the trial bench, Justice Warner was president of the Montana Judges Association, Chairman of the Sentence Review Division of the Supreme Court, served on the District Court Council, and was chairman of the Montana Judicial Standards Commission.
He was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court in May of 2003. He currently serves on the teaching staff of the Commission on Courts of Limited Jurisdiction, the Supreme Court Commission to review the Canons of Judicial Ethics, and the State Bar of Montana Judicial Relations Committee.
