John F. Reif is a justice on the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Justice Reif faced a retention vote for his Supreme Court seat in November 2008, and was retained with 64% of the vote. Democratic Governor appointed Justice Reif to fill the vacancy of retired Justice Robert Lavender in 2007, and was sworn into office on January 23, 2008.
Reif is a graduate of Cascia Hall of Tulsa (1969), the University of Tulsa (1973), and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa in 1977.[1] He is married and his wife's name is Aylo.[2]
Legal background
John F. Reif served as a police officer for the City of Owasso, Oklahoma from 1973 until 1975. He began his legal studies during this time.
Legal career
While completing his law degree, Reif held a position as Planner and Grants Specialist for the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, a part of the Indian Nations Council of Government, from 1974 until 1977. After completion of his Juris Doctor, Reif served as an Assistant District Attorney for Tulsa County from 1978 to 1981. In 1983, he joined the faculty at Oral Roberts University as a Business Law professor, a position that he held until 2007. John F. Reif's first judicial appointment was as a Special District Judge for the Fourteenth Judicial District, a position that he held from 1981 until 1984. He was appointed to the Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals in 1984, where he served as judge, Vice Chief Judge (1993 and 2001) and Chief Judge (1994 and 2002) until his appointment to the Oklahoma Supreme Court in 2007. Each Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice is selected from one of nine judicial districts and sits for a six-year term. Justice Reif is from the first district.[3]
He was appointed to the court on October 22, 2007 by Governor Brad Henry to fill the vacancy of retired justice Robert Lavender. Reif was sworn into office on January 23, 2008.

Reif has frequently written publicly on the topic of ethical responsibility in legal affairs[4] as well as other aspects of the law including summary judgments[5] and standards of judicial review.[6]

Judge Reif was appointed to the Oklahoma Supreme Court by Governor Brad Henry, a Democrat. Because all judgeships are determined by merit, there are no campaign contributions to consider.

Newly sworn-in state Supreme Court Justice John Reif pledged to the governor Wednesday to serve honorably and "in a way you and our bosses (the people) want.” Reif was formally sworn in by retired Supreme Court Justice Robert Lavender, whose position on the court Reif will be filling.[7]
